POST CRIT//

The following sketch shows a construction section showing a rough diagram of how the structure will go together. With a 200mm slab and curtain walling. The T-Bar roof is to allow for suspended ceilings to allow for services (HVAC, plumbing etc). Scale 1:50

This section just shows a fix up from the previous section where the lift core had concrete floors penetrating it.
This is the 2-3 floor plan with a rough plan of a temporary layout for temporary exhibitions. The walls would be of 90mm thick stud wall (inclusive of plasterboard of either side) with wall design to suit the exhibition. For example, if indents are needed in the walls for paintings or displays they will need to be detailed before construction. Exhibitions are to be for around 3 months, and construction to be easily demolished.

The ground floor showing is a rough drawing again of the core being restructured. Reducing the number of lifts to only 2 and the toilets to only 2 per side. This allows for more circulation room and more opportunity for more services to be provided.

This render shows a more dramatic fall in the topography. This was an attempt to make the building look a bit more 'poetic' with the topography surrounding. I was going to attempt to make the building move more with the topography but my construction knowledge was still in the back of my mind thinking of how realistic it could work. I think the use of the topography moving around the building could create more of an optical illusion and alter the aesthetic of the building

CRIT//

The Final crit was a chance to get a final feedback from the tutors.
The main issues brought up were:
- Mainly the aesthetic of the building. Right now it is not as 'iconic' and it should be. For me, not all political buildings need to be of a specific 'traditional' architecture. Nonetheless, there is more opportunity for more aesthetics, so that is something that will be worked on
- Have the topography move with the building. Have the architecture more 'flexible' by moving the building with the moving topography
- Needs to make more of a statement!
- Look more like a political building
- Change floor plans - too many lifts, don't need as many toilets (do draft floor plan)
- Hand draw section showing structure
- Lift in section (fix)
- Fill in empty spaces, temporary layouts
- Thermal chimney.

PROGRESS//

Above is stating how about who i want to attract with my building. I was aiming a lot for youths as I feel a lot of young 20's don't understand political issues going on in Australia today. The idea of this building is to get people more involved in political decisions regarding issues such as youth allowance, carbon tax etc.

PROGRESS//

Progress..
The best way to show is through sketches i've done throughout the design process..
More images to follow

PROGRESS//

Although lacking on the blog front, the progress of my design has been developed. After speaking with Natasha in week 12, my design stayed similar to my original idea of having the moving PODS on either side of the core building.
After speak with Brant in week 13, an idea came about from Brant to have the entire topography as moving squares. This made more sense as it would allow the PODS be more flexible around the side and be able to move all around rather than just the core building.

3D MASSING//

Because my site has been designed on a grid system, The design sort of formed up from the square shape which in turn, has given it quite a lineal shape. Because it was difficult to create curved forms from the square grid, the design needed to fit into the site shape. I did originally want to put a curved facade into the building but decided against it as I felt it would have been out of place and looked like i put it there just for the sake of it.

3D massing model of what my building is planning to look like...

SKETCHES//

Above is a quick layout sketch for the ground floor. The wings on the outside are to show the connections that will be to green public spaces.

BRIEF//

My brief is as follows:
- To provide a building to politically represent issues within the Australian Government
- To have a flexible nature in some sense - Use of hydraulic plates below ground level to move 'pods' on either side of the buildings core
- 20 offices are needed
- 3 head offices for seniors
- Front reception desk
- Connection to green spaces on either side of the building
- Lecture theatre to cater for 250 people
- Staff kitchen to all levels
- Male and female bathrooms to all levels (staff and public)
- Rooftop garden social space
- Exterior area to have assembly area for announcements
- To provide a light rail system along King Avenue and turn onto King Edward Terrace and then back onto Commonwealth Avenue back to Capital Hill
- Plant room
- Security room
- Meeting rooms x 3

POD brief//
- There are 2 kinds of pods. One side will be liberal, the other labor. Issues not in these categories can vary throughout either side
- One side will contain different materials to other to allow for representation of different sides.
- Roughly 8 x 10m
- To contain built in joinery for desks and information booths

SITE//

The site I have chosen in Canberra between Kings Avenue and Dorothy Tangney Place.
The site is currently a carpark roughly 80 x 230m.
The reason I chose this site is that it can coincide with the light rail system that was proposed in assignment 1 (see image attached)
Bordering the site is a busy main vehicular road (Kings Avenue) and the John Gorton Finance Building with adjacent carpark. There is currently landscaping and tree's surrounding the site in which I intent to maintain.
As the site is so big, I will maintain 1/3 - 1/2 of the site to remain as carparking as it is current that the carpark is always full and the area is in need of the carparking facilities. To keep the current number and increase to allow for more carparking for visitors for my project, I will extended the carpark down into the ground to create an underground carpark.
The remainder of the site will consist of my building with surrounding connections to landscape
